A $63 million project to rehabilitate the historic Granada Homes senior apartment tower is set to begin this month under a new partnership that no longer includes the San Antonio Housing Authority.
The $51 million renovation of the Granada Homes building on South St. Mary’s and Villita streets includes restoring the common areas to look almost exactly as they did when the building opened in 1928 as the Plaza Hotel.
For most of the week, the Granada Homes’ elderly residents had no water or heat. As of Saturday morning, things are starting to return to normal.
The 249 units at the Granada Homes will be renovated, and will continue to serve low-income seniors after completion, officials said.
