Not long ago, you could walk by El Tesoro Bar on North Flores Street at 7 and hear Tejano music blaring from the inside—7 in the morning.
Now comes a different kind of bar in the same spot opening at the same time.
It’s called Downtown Nutrition, and it will serve Herbalife protein shakes and coffee, and energy-boosting teas, in the spot on North Flores flanked by Carmens De La Calle and Gloria’s Lounge, a stone’s throw away from the new Frost Tower. The menu will feature dozens of shake flavors and up to 12 tea options. The shakes will cost about $8.
“They are meal replacement shakes,” Proprietor Kayla Longman said. “Our teas are energy-boosting teas. We also serve iced protein coffee. It’s like a healthy bar.”
Each shake packs 24 grams of protein, and will cost you between 200 and 250 calories—excluding extra toppings. Longman said each drink will contain less than 10 grams of sugar.
Longman says Downtown Nutrition, 316 N. Flores St., will have a coffee shop vibe where people can order a drink, hook up to the wifi and chill. She’s hoping to open in November, at the latest.
Hours will be 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday-Sunday.
For Longman, the downtown spot is an expansion of Castle Hills Nutrition in Castle Hills.
She’s looking forward to redevelopment in the area. She mentioned the new Frost Tower and the upcoming University of Texas at San Antonio expansion in the next few years. Also developer Weston Urban plans to add at least 265 housing units in the area. The company is also revamping the green space across from the tower into a park with a restaurant reserved for Pinkerton’s Barbecue of Houston. There’s redevelopment of San Pedro Creek and the renovation of the Alameda Theater are two other huge projects in the works.
“Hopefully in the next two years, it will be completely different than what it is now,” Longman said. “We’ll get to establish ourselves in that space.”
Setting It Straight: In the original version of this article, the name of the bar on North Flores Street was incorrect. It was called El Tesoro Bar.
