The San Antonio Independent School District board approved plans for the district’s new headquarters Monday night—a three-story, 140,000-square-foot office building that’s planned for Fox Tech’s football field and track.

Last week, the Historic and Design Review Commission also approved the design by local firm RVK Architects.

The district plans to centralize its administrative operations into the $30 million project at 727 N. Flores St.—$28 million to construct the building, and $2 million for site work related to sidewalks, landscaping, fencing, etc., SAISD spokeswoman Leslie Price said.

Price said construction is expected to begin in March or April and be completed by August 2020. It’s being funded using proceeds from the sale of land, which includes its current administrative office at 141 Lavaca St. Pearl developer Silver Ventures purchased that 4.74-acre property from SAISD for $14.5 million, the San Antonio Express-News reported in February.

“We are using those funds to build on property we own,” Price said, “so there’s no cost to taxpayers.”

The first phase will include two 250-space parking lots—one next to the building and the other on the old Fox Tech baseball field on Camaron Street.

The district is seeking a partnership with a developer to build a parking garage as part of the headquarters’ second phase.

A pocket park facing San Pedro Creek Culture Park is also planned.

The district held three community meetings with parents, students and other stakeholders of the Fox Tech campus, which houses SAISD’s Advanced Learning Academy (ALA) and the Centers for Applied Science and Technology (CAST Tech) schools.

The preliminary plans at those meetings show new recreational space on the Fox Tech campus side of North Flores Street.

Its primarily a car parking and lawn project for cars and to support the the lawn maintenance industrial complex. There is also an office building.
